EMS Week is a time for celebrating- a time for cookouts, picnics and a time for fun. Like Thanksgiving, EMS Week should also be a time to remember that this profession is full of dangers. It's a time to remember that not all of our comrades from last year are still with us. Some we lost to injury. A few made the ultimate sacrifice.
For the past several years the Fire Service has had a one day stand down to remind everyone of the importance of safety. Beginning in 2010 this day-long event is being expanded to a full week. Safety is no less important in EMS and deserves no less recognition.
Reminding people about safety need not be a wet rag on the fun and celebration. It can and should be seamlessly incorporated into daily events. Here are some ideas and simple reminders.
